Melba Jo (Hair) Walker went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on December 4, 2018, peacefully at her home.
Melba Jo was born August 11, 1928 in Post, TX to Ollie and Joe Hair. Melba and her baby sister, Nelda, were orphaned and came to Oklahoma around 1940. The two children rode the train by themselves from Lubbock, TX to Clayton, OK where Melba’s uncle was the depot agent. The two girls settled into life at Clayton and, in her teen’s, Melba petitioned the Clayton School Board for a girls’ basketball team. They agreed and Melba was on that first girls’ team. When Melba came to Clayton, she and Nelda became members of Clayton’s Church of Christ along with her Aunt Pearl and Uncle Monroe White.
In 1946 Melba met Forest B. (Pete) Walker. It was love that lasted a lifetime. Melba Jo and Pete had three children; Judy Walker, Gail Walker(deceased) and Barbara Walker. Melba Jo taught 5th grade for many years at Crain Elementary, Clayton. After retirement, she continued to paint those lifelike animal and scenic paintings in many local businesses and colleges.
Melba Jo was a kind and generous person. Melba is predeceased by her parents Ollie and Joe Hair, brother Ray Hair, and her daughter, Dr. Gail Walker. She leaves her husband, Forest Walker, of 72 years; two daughters, Judy Walker and Barbara Walker along with her husband Stan Chapman; as well as two grandsons; Billy Shane & Nicole Erwin and Bradley & Katherine Erwin. Her great-grandchildren are Colton, Brooklyn, Nathan, Isaiah and Emaree Martin Erwin. Her sister, Nelda Fowler (Van Buren, AR), nephews Jean Williams, Scott Williams, Ronnie Hair (New Mexico), Dennis Hair (Ft. Worth, TX) as well as many dear sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
