Carol West Obituary

Carol West, age 79, passed away on February 2, 2023 in Nashoba, Oklahoma surrounded by several of her favorite things - family, friends, the farm, and her three four-legged pets.
Born in Tulsa, Okla., Carol was the eldest born to Lois and Gerald Owens, who both preceded her in death. Even in her early years, Carol demonstrated a caring and loving spirit, leading her to pursue a nursing degree after graduating from Edison High School in Tulsa.

As an RN, Carol spent over 30 years caring for patients all over the USA, serving as an emergency room nurse at North Collier and Naples Community hospitals before assuming the role of travel nurse that included service assignments spanning the country. Among her favorite locations was Seward, Alaska, where her meticulous care and loving presence expanded beyond hospital walls to her home, where Carol doted on friends with freshly ironed linens, delicious baked goods, vodka tonics and strawberry margaritas. Known as Seward's Martha Stewart, Carol was equally passionate about Alaskan outdoor adventures where she enjoyed snowshoeing and bonfires at Exit Glacier, flights to Seldovia, and chasing moose found rummaging through her trash. Both her calendar and heart were full which included marriage to Porter DeWitt which produced one child, daughter Alicia Somers and bonus sons Robert and Bryan DeWitt.

In 2006, Carol returned to Oklahoma to care for her aging parents. While her greatest treasure was her family, she also valued the country life of Nashoba, where she built a beloved log cabin home, met the boy next door Larry Jackson, and enjoyed antiquing and thrifting, sewing/quilting, gardening, and making fresh bouquets that adorned her home and she-shed. Even at home, Carol's life was adventurous, whether she was hunting snakes along Buzzard Creek or hunting for Navajo jewelry at antique stores. Her collections were as rare as she was - from owning any room she entered to even a fishing boat. She shared her finds and her stories with friends via phone calls that always begin with "what's new and exciting?", holiday cards that were sent to 150 loved ones, and beautifully handwritten letters that were drafted with her morning coffee.

She will be remembered for her volumes of correspondence, sharp wit and shooting skills, fun-loving spirit, and travels. Welcoming Carol (and her stories) to heaven are her parents, beloved aunts Peggy McCoy and Lolly Kelly, son-in-law Walter Somers, and her furry friends Daisy, Scupper, Suds, Rufus, and Granite.

Carol is survived by her daughter Alicia Somers; life partner Larry Jackson; brother Jerry Owens, his wife Connie and their family; stepsons Robert DeWitt and Bryan DeWitt; goddaughter Emily Peterson and her family; numerous friends across the globe; and canine kids Tux, Oreo, and Coal.

Special thanks to the many medical care providers and friends who sent messages, cards, flowers and expressions of support during Carol's illness and passing.
