Gates Bennett Copeland, known affectionately as Gates to his friends and family, passed away on May 16, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on January 11, 1939, Gates lived a full and accomplished life, marked by dedication to his family, a successful career, and a passion for helping others. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew him.
Gates is survived by his loving wife of many years, Linda Kay Copeland; his devoted daughters, Gaylynn Vorndran and her husband Roger, and Gina Young; his cherished grandsons, Jonathan Vorndran and his wife Ashley, and their children Harper, Hunter, and Hadley, as well as Kyle Vorndran and his wife Leslie and their daughter Ava Bennett. He was a brother to Wiley Johnson Copeland and his wife Linda.
Gates was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lee Copeland and Mauvereen Gates Copeland, his sister Kitty Jane Day, and his brother Billy Copeland.
An alumnus of his local high school, Gates furthered his education through several college courses that prepared him for a remarkable career. He spent thirty years with Duke City Lumber Company in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was known for his integrity and hard work. Gates later transitioned to co-owning Management Recruiters of Houston-Northeast, serving as an executive recruiter specializing in the forest products industry. His professional acumen was recognized repeatedly as he earned accolades as a Top Biller and as a Top Billing Manager. Gates's success was a testament to his belief that "The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary," a quote famously attributed to Vidal Sassoon.
Beyond his professional achievements, Gates was an individual of diverse interests. A lover of golf, hunting, and traveling, he found joy in the simplicity of a well-played round, the tranquility of the hunt, and the adventure of exploring new horizons on cruises. He was an avid reader, often found immersed in the works of Tony Hillerman, John Grisham, and Louis L'Amour. However, it was the Bible that remained his favorite book, a source of comfort and guidance throughout his life.
Gates's compassion and generosity knew no bounds, particularly when it came to supporting missionaries, especially those in Venezuela. His passion for helping others was a beacon of light that inspired many. Whether through his time, resources, or encouragement, Gates made a profound impact on the lives of those around him.
As we remember Gates Bennett Copeland, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, love, and a steadfast commitment to the values he held dear. His legacy will continue to be honored by the family he adored and by the countless lives he touched with his benevolence. Gates's journey through life was a reflection of his character-steadfast, generous, and always striving for excellence. In the quiet moments, we find solace in the words of Helen Keller: "What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Gates's spirit, his love, and his lessons remain a part of us all.
