Gene Allen Obituary

Elbert Eugene "Gene" Allen was born on August 4, 1938, in High Hill, OK, and he passed away on September 21, 2023, at his home in Antlers, OK. Gene lived a rich, fulfilling life and will forever be remembered by his loved ones.

Gene, the son of Leon and Dottie Allen, was a lifetime resident of Antlers. He had a great passion for the outdoors and the local community. Gene owned the well-loved and renowned Bearcat Restaurant. He was known not just as an excellent businessman, but also as a real master in the kitchen.

Beyond his business pursuits, Gene was an old soul in the modern world. He relished life's simple pleasures such as gardening, and horseback riding in the mountains, often referred to as one of the last true horsemen. Having been a great high school athlete, he passed down his love of sports and the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He was an accomplished master carpenter, delighting in helping his family with various home projects.

Gene, who was happily married to his wife Tommy J. Allen, often referred to lovingly as "Mommy J," for over 60 years until her passing, found great joy in his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Tommy; grandson: Tony Coggins; and his parents.

Gene is survived by his children: Leigh Ann McCollough (Rick), Vicki Coggburn (Carter), and Mike Allen (Jill); his siblings: Joreita Smith, Jimmy Allen, and Harold Allen, along with his cherished grandchildren: Sara Bell and husband Michael of Antlers, April Coggins of Antlers, Rachel Rabon and husband Kye of Moore, OK, Cale Allen and wife Katy of Wicket, TX, and Codi Brooks and husband Kelsey of Shawnee, OK; and great-grandchildren: Dyllynn Bell, Ty Bell and wife Courtney, Legend Bell, Journey Bell, Adventure Bell, Tripp Allen, Tori Allen, Tatum Brooks; and great-great-grandchildren: Gunner, Macie, and Harper.

Gene was a man of warmth, character, and laughter. His love for his family was deep and abiding. He was happiest when surrounded by his grandchildren and later, his great-grandchildren, regaling them with stories of his past and teaching them the ways of tradition. Gene's mark on the community will be remembered in the lives of those he touched, and his legacy will live on through the family he so adored. His presence will be greatly missed - a pillar of our family now watches over us.
