James "Larry" Morgan Obituary

James "Larry" Morgan, age 86, passed away on August 16, 2025 in McAlester, OK. Larry was born to his parents Bess and William Morgan on September 27, 1938 in Darwin, OK.


Larry’s father passed away when he was young. He was raised by his mother Bess and stepfather Bob Dozier. Larry grew up in the Darwin area and worked the land with his family.


Larry finished school and went on to college at East Central University (East Central State College) in Ada and earned his teaching degree in science.


On June 10, 1961 Larry married Johnnie Jordan and they would have three children Brad, Laurie and Shirl along with a special nephew Joey Martin. Larry began his teaching career in Moyers, OK in 1960 and then moved to Rattan Schools in 1967.  Larry would spend 38 years teaching school where he was a high school science teacher, jr. high principal, 4-H leader, bus driver and coach. He was very devoted to the Rattan School District and the community. Larry would coach jr. high girls basketball where he would have several successful seasons with his girls. He was also very involved with 4-H and FFA and would mentor several students along the way. He spent countless hours working with students on their 4-H/FFA projects or animals. He would chaperone many trips to Washington DC in the summers to further their education.


Summers were spent working different jobs and gaining friendships along the way. Larry loved spending time outdoors whether it was fishing on Little River or at the deer camp in the woods with his closest friends. With the addition of grandchildren, Larry became known as Pop. He loved to spend time with them and watching them grow up.


Larry is survived by his wife of 64 years Johnnie Morgan of Antlers OK, his three children and their spouses Brad Morgan and wife Missy of Stillwater OK, Laurie Ramsey and husband Steve of Sapulpa OK, and Shirl Wilcher and husband Matt of Antlers OK. Grandchildren Jordan Morgan and wife Shannon of Houston TX, Branson Morgan of Stillwater OK, Nicklaus Ramsey of Tulsa OK, Kyler Ramsey of Sapulpa OK, Kylie Wilcher of Chickasha OK, Mattley and Cason Wilcher of Antlers OK, and many other family and friends.


Larry was proceeded in death by his infant brother W.C. Morgan, Mother Bess, Father William, and stepfather Bob Dozier and Grandmother Emma Morgan.


Family night will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2025 from 5-7PM at Serenity Funeral Service in Antlers. A funeral service will take place on Friday, August 22, 2025 at 10AM at First Baptist Church Antlers. Interment will follow at Antlers City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Larry’s name to Rattan Public Schools.
