Katherine Elizabeth (Bates) McCary left this life surrounded by family and was received by her Savior in glory. She passed away in Paris, Texas on February 5, 2023, at the age of 88. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 31, 1934, to Horace Bates and Elizabeth (Hayes) Bates, and sister to her younger brother, Horace "Buzz" Bates.
Katherine, who always went by Betty, grew up in Pennsylvania until she was twelve years old when she moved with her family to Albany, Oregon. She graduated high school in Albany as a straight-A honors student and won homecoming queen, where her soon-to-be husband, Jimmie, first laid eyes on her and said, "I'm going to marry that girl." Eight months later, they were married on December 7, 1952. She briefly worked as a hospital clerk. Over the course of several years, she and her husband welcomed their three sons, Mark, Steven, and Doug, before moving from Albany to Mesa, Washington, in 1966. Betty and Jimmie were always supportive of their sons' pursuit of high school sports, attending many of their events. After her husband started farming in eastern Washington, she took on the task of bookkeeping for the farm and simultaneously worked as an accountant for a local tax service. She continued to work for the tax service for many years, then as the farm continued to grow, became the full-time bookkeeper for McCary Farms Inc. She also served as the treasurer of Connell Church of the Nazarene. For several years, she owned and operated the Country Deli in Basin City, which was a gathering place for all the local farmers. Betty and Jimmie eventually retired from the farm and moved to southeast Oklahoma, where they built a home near Turkey Creek Landing Park. Betty thoroughly enjoyed cooking for her family, and often made cinnamon rolls on Sundays for her boys when they were growing up. She enjoyed hosting holiday dinners at her home. She loved spending time outdoors in her beautiful flower garden and mowing the lawn, and was well known for her green thumb. In her downtime, she could be found working on puzzles and watching the news to keep up on current events.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Joshua Steven McCary, her brother, Buzz, and her husband, Jimmie, with whom she shared 65 wonderful years.
She is survived by her sons, Mark E. McCary and wife Estella, Steven W. McCary and wife Diane, and Douglas E. McCary and wife Kathy; grandchildren Caleb (Laura), Phil (Dani), Colleen (James) Evans, Luke, Malachi (Shauna), Benjamin (Becca), Levi (Melanie), David (Nicolette), Nicole (Raul) Hernandez, Rebekah (DiJon) Davis, Michelle (Tony) Gomez, and Sarah (Tim) Shinault; twenty-one great-grandchildren with one on the way. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Bud McCary and his wife, Marlene, and brother-in-law Elmer Cook.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 11AM at the First Baptist Church of Rattan with Caleb McCary officiating. Graveside will follow at Hall Cemetery.
Services have been entrusted with Serenity Funeral Service of Antlers, OK.
