Leonard Albert Massey was born on December 28, 1944 in Antlers, Oklahoma to Claude Hampton Massey and Edith Delma (Holladay) Massey. He passed from this life on October 25, 2023 at his home in Antlers at the age of 78.
Leonard was born and raised in Antlers, but made a move to New Mexico in 1961 to be with his father. Shortly after, in 1963, he joined the US Navy, where he served proudly as Master At Arms for 20 years before his retirement in 1983. He returned home to Oklahoma to live in Wilburton for about 5 years where he and his brother owned a body shop, and he later worked for Bill Johnson. Leonard married his high school sweetheart Linda and moved back to his hometown of Antlers in 1989, where they have remained for the last 35 years. He was a man of many jobs and talents, some of which include: driving a school bus for Antlers Schools for 4 years, Wilbert Vaults for 10 years, dug many graves for Choctaw county for the past 20 years, dug footings for Boyd Carter, helped Modesto Guerrero with several projects, and completed cemetery setups for Serenity Funeral Service, McCarn Funeral Service, Mills & Coffey Funeral Home, Gordan Funeral Service, Burkhart Funeral Home, Prater Lampton Mills Funeral Home, and Holmes Coffey Murray Funeral Home. Leonard was a hard worker, and a genuinely good man who never hesitated to help anyone who needed it.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Claude Massey and Edith (Holladay)(Massey) Petty; one daughter: Andrea Jane (Massey) Jamgochian of Weatherly, PA; step-son that he raised as his own: James Franklin Sutterfield of Antlers, OK; grandson: Taylor James Sutterfield; three sisters: Vinada Mae (Kincaid) Mustang and husband Roy of Oklahoma City, OK, Neola Gladiene (Massey) Cole of Antlers, and Deborah (Massey) Broomfield and husband Vernon of Wilburton, OK; five brothers: Hampton Lee Massey of New Mexico, James "Corky" Kincaid of Antlers, OK, Marvin Askew, Jr. of Lower Lake, CA, Norman Lee Askew of Antlers, OK, and Ronald "Ronnie" Massey of Wilburton, OK; step-sister: Pauline Massey; and brother-in-law: Clifford Sloan.
Leonard is survived by his wife: Linda (Prater)(Sutterfield) Massey of the home; one son: Bryan Lee Massey of Pueblo, CO; one step-son that he raised as his own: Tommy Joe Sutterfield of Antlers, OK; one daughter: Samantha Ann; one son-in-law: Leigh Jamgochian of Weatherly, PA; one daughter-in-law: Jodi Sutterfield of Antlers, OK; four granddaughters: Stephanie and Savannah Anne Jamgochian of Weatherly, PA, Kaci Jo Sutterfield and Jessi Lynn Sutterfield of Antlers, OK; two grandsons: James Cameron Romer Massey of Calhan, CO, and Morgan Alex Sutterfield of Antlers, OK; two sisters: Claudine (Massey) Sloan of Fay, OK, Joyce (Kincaid) Sewell of Marysville, CA; step-sister: Mary Jo Massey of Arkansas; sisters-in law: Toye Massey of Wilburton, OK, Cheryl Prater and Dean Farley of Antlers, OK, and Peggy Edwards of Cameron, OK brother-in-law: Harlen Prater of Gypsum, KS; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as a number of friends, relatives, and colleagues.
Leonard touched the lives of many, and he will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Services for Leonard will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 1PM at the Serenity Funeral Service Chapel with G.W. Pigg officiating. Interment will follow at Antlers City Cemetery.
