Obituary

McNew Islam Thomas, a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, entered the gates of Heaven on September 7, 2023, in McAlester, OK. He was born on October 4, 1942, in Talihina, OK, to Impson Mataha Thomas and Lizzie Mae Wilson Thomas.

McNew was preceded in death by his parents: Impson and Lizzie Thomas; his brothers: Clarence Thomas, Jimmy Ray Thomas, and Wrightsman Thomas; his sister: Hazel Wilson; as well as great-grandson: Nashoba Bryan Smith.

Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 61 years: Nadine Thomas, whom he married on May 4, 1962, in Hugo, OK. Together they had three children: Ruby Gay and Mike McLaughlin of Antlers, OK, Paula Weathers of Antlers, OK, Eva Smith of McAlester, OK, and adopted daughter Carolyn Nicholas and husband Roy of Lane, OK. McNew also leaves behind his brothers: Gerald Don Thomas of McAlester, OK, Lester Thomas of Antlers, OK, and Impson Mataha Thomas, Jr.; and sister: Ruby Harjo of Valencia, CA. His legacy extends to his seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Prior to his retirement, McNew faithfully served his community as an LPN at Pushmataha Hospital, where his kindness and skill will be long remembered. His dedication to serving others made him a cherished presence in the hospital.

McNew's hobbies indulged his creative and artistic instincts. He harbored a deep admiration for Native American art and crafts. Additionally, his passion for music came through in his enjoyment of playing the guitar and singing for Jesus. McNew also loved to be surrounded by the beauty of nature while camping and fishing.

Throughout his life, McNew was renowned for his kindness, humility, and devotion to his family. His warm presence will be deeply missed, yet his spirit will remain a beacon of love and strength in the hearts of all who knew him. His 80 years on Earth have left an indelible impact on his community and his family, for which he will always be remembered.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 10AM at Church of the Rock in Lane, OK. Interment will follow at Corinne Cemetery

Services are under the direction of Serenity Funeral Service of Antlers, OK.
