Norma Mae Vaughan Obituary

Norma Mae (Smith) Vaughan was born on July 6, 1933 in Jumbo, Oklahoma. She passed from this world into Eternity on May 1, 2024. She was a pioneer woman and farmer, and lived all of her life around here in S.E. Oklahoma. When Norma was young, she'd rather work in the fields and hoe corn and cotton with her two older brothers than go in and fix lunch for the workers. She lived a long life of 90 years and went from riding horses to flying on a jet airplane.

After the death of her husband, Kenneth, she worked at the Post Office in Pittsburgh, Oklahoma for several years. When she moved to Antlers in 1999, she worked for the Antlers School System in the "Grandmother Program," tutoring and helping many children in their school work. She liked to work word puzzles as she said: "to keep her mind sharp." She was an avid reader, loved the Library, and even wrote several short stories in her younger years.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth E. ("Kenny") Vaughan and his wife, Cheryl Lake Vaughan in Antlers. Also two granddaughters, Kimberly Vaughan Lockaby, Oklahoma City, and Janette Vaughan Byrd and her husband, Robert, Fayetteville, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Kenneth Vaughan. Also her parents, Charley Nathaniel Smith and Willie Mae (Tomlinson) Smith; and grandparents, George Travis Smith and Mary Catheryn (Bushart) Smith; and Nicholas Henry Tomlinson and Martha Jane (Waller) Tomlinson. And her brothers, Sylvester Smith and wife Clara Mae ("Corkie"), and Clinton Smith and wife Vella Mae.

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Norma was very close to Charlie Smith (nephew) and his wife, Anna, Durant, OK; Kathie (Smith) Kindred (niece) and husband Ray ("Peck"), Clayton, OK; and Earl Smith (nephew) and wife Gail, Jumbo, OK. And all of their children and grandchildren!

A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 10, 2024 at 2PM at Mountain Home Cemetery in Daisy, OK with Charlie and Earl Smith officiating.

Services are under the direction of Serenity Funeral Service of Antlers, OK.
