Ruby Lavon (Shrader) Surette was born to Lee and Laura (Bessie) Shrader in Mena, Arkansas on December 5, 1939. She passed from this life in Antlers, Oklahoma on February 14, 2025, at the age of 85. When she was a small child the family moved to California, where she resided until she moved to Antlers a few years ago.
In 1956, Lavon married Wyley Vanderburg and they had two children, Gregory and Ginger. After a divorce she and the children moved from Modesto to southern California to be near her family. She married Gary Busby and they had a daughter, Kari Busby. Her third husband was Jack Surette and they remained married until his death in November 2006.
Lavon was a beautiful, tiny, little woman but she was a force to "reckon with". She was strong willed and determined, insisting on doing things her way until the very end. Lavon was a hard worker but she also enjoyed having a good time. She loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally.
Lavon was preceded in death by her two beloved daughters: Ginger and Kari, her parents, five siblings and her husband.
She is survived by her son: Greg Vanderburg and wife Joyce of Antlers, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren: Erica Smith and husband Travis, Jeremy Vanderburg and wife Mary, Joshua Vanderburg and wife Trisha, James Vanderburg and wife Stephanie, Ranae Mattingly, Atreyu Busby, Seth Oland, Gingerlee Oland, Jesse Beaty and Keyli Beaty; twelve great grandchildren; fourteen great-great grandchildren with two more on the way in October.
The family would like to thank Dr. Rowland, the staff at Pushmataha Hospital and May's Home Health for their superb care and treatment in these final years.
Services for Lavone will be held at a later date.
Services for Lavone are under the direction of Serenity Funeral Service in Antlers, Oklahoma.
